All the major US carriers are already selling their own versions of the Samsung Galaxy S and now it is time for the smaller competitors to come in to play as well. We’ve heard some news about the Samsung Galaxy S issues with GPS functionality. Now, it seems Engadget has located the source of the problem, or rather the sources, and provides Galaxy S owners with a plan of action. The first issue seems to be a quick fix; apparently Google has required that all phones have use of the wireless network for GPS turned off by default. Unfortunately, the second issue will have to be resolved by Samsung in their next firmware update. Full details on the problems after the break. “Use wireless networks” is now turned off by default, but even with it on, the phone may be slow or unable to determine even a rough location.
Originally, we’d believed this was the only problem. Samsung tells us that it’s a new Google mandate that Android devices be shipped with the “use wireless networks” option disabled, which means you’re relying on traditional GPS alone to determine your location — a lost cause indoors, in urban canyons, or under dense tree cover. Indeed, we discovered it was turned off on our Captivate, Vibrant, and Epic 4G after fresh hard resets, and there’s no indication to the user that it’s probably in their best interest to enable it; we’re accustomed to being presented with the option during account setup on other Android devices, but it doesn’t happen here. After enabling it from settings, we found that both the Captivate and Epic 4G were able to get our location with 1,000 to 1,500-meter accuracy practically immediately in Google Maps, though the Vibrant still never came through; it had the weakest signal of the three, which may have accounted for that (though it never dropped the signal altogether).
The regular GPS circuitry and software aren’t doing their job.
Cell tower triangulation and WiFi location database services like Skyhook only take you so far — at the end of the day, you still need to tune in to the birds a few thousand miles up to figure out precisely where you are. All Galaxy S models seem to be having trouble turning GPS reception into coordinates, even when the phone is able to see four or more satellites in view (four is the minimum you normally need for a precise, three-dimensional lock). In some cases, resetting the phone apparently helps, but it ceases to work again after a day or two of use. To our knowledge, none of the homebrew fixes out there have been able to solve this part of the problem perfectly and permanently. The Captivate and Vibrant are both affected by this one; we’re not sure on the Epic, but we’re working to nail it down.

Now that Android owners are getting comfy using the official Twitter app on their smartphones, it would’ve been only a matter of time before some kind of update were released for it. Sneaking underneath the radar, the app was recently updated to version 1.0.3 which unfortunately did not come along with a change-log.
However, it appears that it’s basically comprised of mostly the usual bug fixes you’d expect to find and that it now utilizes OAuth for signing into the service. Aside from that, there really isn’t anything too different with it – so make sure to grab yourself the download through the Android Market.

Easy come, easy go. It was just yesterday when we reported that Melissa Thompson of the U.K. banged out the phrase, “the razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality, they seldom attack a human” in 25.94 seconds to become the Guinness World Record holder for fastest texting. Ms. Thompson used a Swype keyboard that was pre-installed on her Samsung Galaxy S.
Records are made to be broken and this one lasted all of 1 day. A video shows a gentleman by the name of Brian Sweet who used the keyboard on his Apple iPhone 4 to tap out the same phrase as Ms. Thompson did. Sweet says his time was a solid 4 seconds faster than the record set yesterday. But we would suggest that Mr. Sweet not rest on his laurals. With plenty of practice, someone else could be holding the record as soon as tomorrow.

Meizu has a bit of a reputation for copying other devices, namely the iPhone. So when CEO Jack Wong announced that the new M9 will boast a screen resolution of 960 x 640, the same as Apple’s Retina display, familiar red flags were raised. Wong also iterated that the device will feature a heavily customized version of Android 2.2, and is anticipating it will be released by the end of this yearm and with demo units landing in October. We’re hoping the M9 will be more than just an iPhone clone, and will in fact serve as an example for more manufacturers to strive for better displays.

Social networking has grown tremendously over the past several years, from a simple way to keep in touch with friends, to a multi-billion dollar industry which helps businesses stay connected with their clients as much as it helps you see what your cousin James is doing this weekend. Seeing as there are so many social networking options to choose from now, having a single tool to manage your major accounts is extremely handy.
Many of you may already be familiar with TweetDeck, a multi-client social media application which has grown to become the largest Twitter client with 19% of the market, only behind posting via the Web at Twitter.com. One of its biggest draws, aside from the multi-client functionality, is the ability to create personalized columns of information. On the desktop version this can consist of keyword searches on Twitter, feeds of all your various social networking accounts, or even specifics like photo or wall feeds on Facebook.
It has been a long time coming, but TweetDeck for Android is finally upon us, albeit in beta form. The company affirms they have built the application from the ground up, allowing them to retain the use of columns, but changing the way they function in order to optimize their use on the mobile platform. So, does TweetDeck for Android live up to its expectations? Is it simply too early to tell with the beta release? Continue reading after the break to find out during our full review of the TweetDeck for Android beta.
First and foremost, if you would like to participate in the beta, you have to be a registered TweetDeck user in order to receive the download link via email. Visit the TweetDeck for Android beta page to register, or to sign-in with your account in order to receive the link. Now, onto business.
After you install the application, you are initially presented with the account management page to sign in with either your TweetDeck account, or with one or more individual social networking accounts. Currently, TweetDeck for Android supports Twitter, Facebook, Buzz, and Foursquare, and there is no word yet as to whether or not LinkedIn or Myspace (which is available on the desktop app) will make it into the final version. If you choose to login with your TweetDeck account, the application will automatically connect you to the clients associated with your account. It should be noted that multiple Twitter accounts are not really supported at this time, which will surely be fixed for the final release.
The differences between the desktop and Android application can be immediately seen on the new “Home” column, which combines all of your main social network feeds into one timeline, rather than splitting them up into their own unique columns. Updates from each account are separated by colored backgrounds: Twitter appears as a dark gray background, Foursquare is a light blue, Facebook, a dark blue, and Buzz is a light red. Once you familiarize yourself with the color scheme, it becomes quite simple to differentiate between your account feeds. The other two default columns are “Me” and “Direct Messages”, which combines all of your public messages and mentions, any direct Twitter messages, respectively.
Next, let’s take a look at the search function within TweetDeck for Android, which also doubles as the means for adding a Twitter search column. To make a Twitter search, simply tap the magnifying glass icon in the bottom menu navigation, and enter your query. To make this search a permanent, updating column, tap the “Add Column” button as seen in the screenshot below. Currently, the only custom columns you are able to add are these Twitter search feeds. Signing in with a TweetDeck user account failed to populate any existing columns, which is something that will hopefully be remedied in the final release.
Another exciting feature to the Android app is a “favorites list” of sorts, that enables you to select 12 contacts to be placed in a grid-like structure. Upon tapping the individual icons, you are given a summary of their profile, depending on the account they are using. For example, tapping on a Twitter user will bring up a summary of their account, whereas tapping a Facebook user will bring up their Wall.
Posting updates for single or multiple accounts is a breeze with TweetDeck for Android. You can simply select from any of the accounts you are signed-in under, and your post will be made on the accounts of your choosing. You are also given the option to add a picture, post your location, or make a quick @reply on Twitter with the “Add Contact” button. Unfortunately, adding a video is not available at this time, which is another issue that will hopefully be addressed before the final release. A steady stream of updates has been released since the launch of the beta, and is currently at build 0.9.3. A nice change that occurred with the most recent update is the ability to adjust the text size. This is an incredibly useful feature, as the default text size was a bit on the large size, especially if you have lengthy columns.
Conclusions:
While still suffering from several flaws, the TweetDeck for Android beta certainly shows signs of becoming a major favorite among new and previous users. Whether you utilize just one, or several of the social networking accounts available to TweetDeck, there is something here for just about everyone. Some areas still need some work, including the handling of multiple Twitter accounts, an easier method for managing columns, adding videos to updates, and some overall bug squashing. For example, when testing the application’s Foursquare functionality, I was often treated to unexpected errors, crashes, and the basic inability to even log into my account. Also, as previously mentioned, signing in with your TweetDeck user account does not fully synchronize all of your columns to the phone.
Nevertheless, the application runs quite smoothly, especially considering it is a beta release. Posting updates is simple, and the overall flow of the menus and scrolling through columns is quick and responsive. It seems that taking the time to build this application from the ground up has paid off, and it is clear why TweetDeck will be incorporating the elements contained here into their iPhone and iPad versions.

Sold as an unlocked device with no strings attached
TATA DoCoMo has unveiled that the HTC Desire will be added to it’s ever growing Android portfolio in India. The phone will be available for Rs. 28,900 (about $620) across all HTC resellers across the nation. That may seem pretty steep, but keep in mind that it will be sold as an unlocked device with no strings attached (you can even use it on a pre-pay plan if you want).
The carrier is sweetening the deal by bundling the device with 6 months of free data (500MB per month). Once you buy the phone, you will have to text “Android” to 54321 to activate the free data offer.
For anyone that doesn’t remember, the HTC Desire comes with a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 3.7-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen, Android 2.1 (upgradable to Android 2.2 Froyo) with HTC Sense UI running on top of it, 5-megapixel camera and front-facing camera for video calls, HSPA and WiFi connectivity, GPS, microSD memory card slot and all the other usual smartphone specs. That’s pretty much the same specs as the Nexus One for anyone that wishes they had bought one before it was discontinued.
For all of you HTC Wildfire users out there that have been anxiously awaiting root access, your wait is finally over…kinda. A method has been released from the great folks over at XDA which gives the Wildfire a “soft” root, meaning that although NAND unlock and custom ROMs are not possible, root-only apps like wireless tether are good to go.

HTC’s PR and community manager Eric Lin has revealed the company’s Windows Phone 7 details.
Lin told Pocket Lint that HTC will be on Windows Phone 7 “on day one.” Lin spoke to the website at Qualcomm’s Uplinq conference in San Diego. However, Lin did bring up the subject of the restrictions Microsoft has applied to the new OS.
“We won’t be able to change the core applications. We won’t be able to put a skin on top of the operating systems like we’ve done in the past,” Lin told Pocket Lint. “However, that doesn’t mean that we can’t do anything. We can add. We can’t cover, we can’t change, but we can add. So we’re going to look at how we can add, and how we can add value because of that. Even for the homescreen (Microsoft) is pretty prescriptive. But we can still add to the homescreen, so we can add our own tiles to that. It’s going to be a lot more adding than changing”.
We’re pretty sure HTC can afford to be positive about its Windows Phone 7 plans – after all, HTC has been the Windows Mobile market leader for quite some while now, and the hardware restrictions Microsoft has applied to the platform will surely spawn some truly range-topping devices.
